Does Candy Corn Have Bugs in It?

I Googled “candy corn” right before I was about to start a nice, fun article about how the treat is made.

But those plans changed when I saw the search results.

Numerous articles claimed that bugs were the secret ingredient in candy corn. I was caught by surprise.

At this point, I should really be used to all the myths about food being perpetuated by those who want to fear-monger, but it’s always a little disheartening.

Spoiler alert: insects aren’t the secret ingredient to candy corn.

There is, however, an ingredient that comes from bugs, although it’s listed on the ingredient statement, so I’d hardly call it a secret.

Insects are Food

First and foremost, let me make it clear that there’s nothing inherently wrong with consuming insects. Insects are a valuable food and protein source for many people worldwide.

But I get it, the idea of bugs in your candy still doesn’t sound appealing.
